Almond Cookies

2/3 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg white, lightly beaten
1/2 cup slivered almonds

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and almond extract, beating well. Combine flour, baking powder, soda and salt and stir into creamed mixture.

Shape dough into 1 1/2-inch balls, and place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheets. Brush lightly with egg white and top with a few slivered almonds. Bake at 375 for 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to rack to cool

Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
